Governor Northam Declares State of Emergency Ahead of Gun Rights Rally

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has declared a State of Emergency banning all firearms and other weapons at the Capitol grounds in Richmond in preparation for the gun rights rally planned for next week. Northam states he made this decision amidst fears potential violence.

“We have received credible intelligence from our law enforcement agencies that there are groups with malicious plans for the rally that is planned for Monday,” Northam said during a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Organizers of the event, hosted by Virginia Citizens Defense League, are expecting to draw thousands of armed demonstrators, including some from out of state. They have said they hope to hold a peaceful event.

Supporters of gun rights are planning on holding a demonstration Monday to voice their opposition to numerous gun control bills up for vote.

Northam said officials have heard reports of “out-of-state militia groups and hate groups planning to travel from across the country to disrupt our democratic process with acts of violence.” He claims they “are coming to intimidate and to cause harm.”

On the Facebook page organizing the gun rights demonstration, several commenters expressed outrage and frustration at Northam’s move to restrict guns from the Capitol grounds. One wrote, “This is simply a move to infringe on not only our 2nd Amendment rights but our 1st Amendment rights as well.”

This is what tyrannical governments do and shows just how serious they take their oath to the constitution.
