Luke 23:3- And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.
There are many today in and outside the Church with this same convoluted mentality, they disregard the whole salvation plan of God and what it entails, that the moment they hear about or get to the signs and wonders performed by Jesus Christ, that’s all they see Him as, a street magician.
The supernatural works that Jesus did and enabled His disciples and the early Church to do was indicative to His nature as Messiah (THE CHRIST) and God, and the firm foundational set up of His Church and to confirm the Apostles who were the messengers of this new found faith to which Jesus was the head of, observe:
Hebrews2:3-4 How shall we escape, if we neglect SO GREAT SALVATION; which at the FIRST began to be spoken by the Lord (Jesus), and was CONFIRMED (The Salvation Message That is) unto US (The Hebrew/Jewish people who heard the message) by THEM (Disciples/Apostles who were with Christ every step of the way) that heard Him (Jesus).
Now how were these Jews to believe or to confirm these preachers of the Gospel? they’ve heard plenty about Jesus Christ and His supernatural works among the people but Jesus physically was no longer there and we know the Jews seek after signs, and so we have the NEXT VERSE which explains a lot of the signs and wonders that was done heavily through the disciples and Apostles in the early Church, observe:
4 God also BEARING THEM (The early Church preachers of the Gospel to the Jews) WITNESS, both WITH SIGNS and WONDERS, and with DIVERS MIRACLES, and GIFTS of the Holy Ghost, ACCORDING to His (God’s) OWN WILL (meaning that’s what God chose to do at that time to confirm THEM, doesn’t mean it is His will to keep confirming us all the time with signs and wonders, we primarily live by FAITH not SIGHT, we are called to generally study the bible, teach and preach it)?
Now in the initial verse above, Jesus was sent by Pilate to king Herod because Jesus lived in Herod’s jurisdiction and Pilate did not find Jesus guilty of any crime, but instead of releasing Jesus he sends Jesus to another authority to convict Him. Herod’s view of Jesus is very skewed as most are today, He see’s Jesus as a clown or a magician who performs for their need and entertainment only. Christ then became an object of mockery to Herod and his men, so how did Jesus respond to the request of performing signs and wonders? Observe:
Luke23:9- Then he (King Herod) questioned with Him (Jesus) in many words (Herod kept on pushing the issue for Jesus to do signs and wonders); but He (Jesus) ANSWERED him NOTHING.
Jesus did not entertain Herod at all, He kept silent. If Herod couldn’t ascertain the deity, kingship, messianic and redemptive quality of Jesus Christ through what he had heard, then nothing more could be done for him.
Question is, do you believe what you have studied and read about Jesus Christ in the bible or is He a magician who performs signs and wonders when you ask as Herod did? Are we a salvation by God’s grace through Faith generation or a signs and wonders generations? Observe?
Matthew12:39- But He (Jesus) answered and said unto them, An EVIL and ADULTEROUS GENERATION SEEKETH AFTER A SIGN; and there shall NO SIGN BE GIVEN TO IT, but the sign of the prophet Jonas.
Fear God and repent…
