Planned Parenthood releases report on what taxpayers are funding
The Planned Parenthood Federation of America released its 2013-2014 annual report Wednesday, detailing the services it provides and the sources of its funding.
Among the statistics revealed: Approximately 700 Planned Parenthood health centers in the U.S. performed a total of 327,653 abortions in the fiscal year.
Also among the details: $528.4 million of the organization’s revenues – 41 percent of its total funds – come from “government health services and grants and reimbursements.”
Although law prohibits the federal government from paying directly for abortions, critics of Planned Parenthood argue the millions in taxpayer money pay for clinics and operations expenses, thus indirectly funding the abortion business; while advocates claim abortions make up only 3 percent of medical services provided by Planned Parenthood.
The pro-life organization Susan B. Anthony List, however, found other reasons for criticism in the report, noting that services Planned Parenthood provides to pregnant women overwhelmingly lead to abortion.
“In 2013,” the SBA List notes, “abortions made up 94 percent of Planned Parenthood’s pregnancy services, while prenatal care and adoption referrals accounted for only 5 percent (18,684) and 0.5 percent (1,880), respectively.”
An SBA List fact sheet further noted a rise in abortions services from previous years’ Planned Parenthood reports but a drop in cancer prevention services by 17 percent and contraceptive services by 4 percent.
Planned Parenthood also reported a $127.1-million excess of revenue over expenses for the fiscal year and a total of over $1.4 billion in net assets.
After reviewing the report, SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser made the following comments: “Their latest annual report is fresh evidence that Planned Parenthood remains an abortion-centered, profit-driven business. In 2013, Planned Parenthood upped the number of abortions they performed to 327,653. Meanwhile, their already limited cancer screenings, prenatal services, adoption referrals – and even contraception services – continue to drop. Planned Parenthood claims to be an altruistic health care provider for women and girls, but their bottom line is all about abortion.”
