The White House has confirmed the beheading of American aid worker Peter Kassig following an intense review of an ISIS video purporting to show a militant standing above his severed head.

The announcement comes just hours after the 26-year-old’s parents issued an emotional statement about the fate of their ‘treasured’ son, who was captured by the Islamic State in Syria last October.

In the release, Ed and Paula Kassig, of Indianapolis, said they hoped the war veteran would be remembered for his ‘important work’ and the love he shared with his friends and family.

The confirmation also comes as President Barack Obama flies back to Washington from Hawaii after visiting the Asia Pacific region. He is reportedly being briefed about the video en route.
